Firstly Go To The Test Center

Before your test day, check your IELTS test start time and make sure you know how to get to the test center on time. We recommend that you do this a week in advance so that you are fully prepared.

Don’t forget to also check the location of your IELTS test location, as it may be different from the test center where you booked your test.

Arrive For Your IELTS Test

Make sure you have read and understood the IELTS test terms and conditions as they contain important information about your test day. These can be found in the Test Taker Information section of your application form.

If you arrive late for your IELTS test, you may not be allowed to participate.

Turn off your smart phone and any other electronic device or gadgets. These will be kept outside the testing room with other personal effects.

The listening, reading and writing tests are end in 140 minutes. Please note that or highlight there will be no breaks or interval during the tests.

You cannot bring any food or drink into the exam room – except water in a clear bottle. Make sure you have something substantial to eat before your test.

Your Identity Documents

IELTS staff will verify your identity on arrival, the documents you received when registering for the test will confirm the ID you will need. If you reach your destination without the correct ID, you will not allowed able to take the test.

As an added security measure, IELTS staff will take a photo of you before you take the test. The picture will be used as on your test report form.

In some other countries, you may also be asked to give a finger scan.

During your test

Follow these rules when taking your IELTS test:

  • You are only allowed to have a pencil, a pen, your ID card and an eraser on your desk.
  • If you must use the restroom during the test, raise your hand to get the invigilator’s attention and do not disturb other candidates.
  • Raise your hand to get the proctor’s attention if you want to ask a question during the test.
  • When taking the listening test, check that you hear the recording clearly. If you can’t, raise your hand and tell the invigilator.
  • After the listening section, you will have 10 minutes to complete the answer sheet. However, you won’t have 10 minutes after the Reading section, so be sure to write your answers on your answer sheet as you complete each section.
  • At the end of the test
  • Stay in your seat until you have permission from the invigilator to leave the exam room.
  • If you think your performance may have been affected by any issues, let the invigilator know immediately.

If you wish to make a complaint about your test day, you must do so within one week of the test date by completing the complaint form.

Special provisions:

If you have requested special arrangements due to a disability or other condition, accommodations will be made for you on the day of your test.

Tips for test day

  1. Follow all instructions carefully and remember that in the writing parts of the test you will be required to write a specific number of words.
  2. Some questions have time limits that you must follow, be sure to stay time conscious to ensure you have enough time to answer each question.
  3. Stay calm and breathe deeply if you feel nervous or worried.

  • Go ahead and hit the beach or jog in the park.
  • Or you can be like me and take your furry friend for a walk.
  • Use English as part of your daily routine.
  • Train your brain to think in English before the test.
  • Watch English movies, read English newspapers and chat with your English speaking friends.
  • Prepare what you need.
  • Now that you’re all relaxed, prepare the things you need for test day:
  • Make sure you know where to go, and that you have allowed enough time to get there.

Organize the things you need, including your ID

  • Make sure it’s the same one you used when you registered for your test.
  • Be confident.
  • Put on your winning hat!
  • Believe in yourself because your attitude will have a definite impact on your performance.
